To investigate those questions, an international team of researchers (including a classical pianist, a rock drummer and a concert bassist) asked hundreds of people what stories they imagined when listening to instrumental music. The results appeared recently in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The researchers, led by Princeton?s Elizabeth Margulis and Devin McAuley of Michigan State University, discovered that listeners in Michigan and Arkansas imagined very similar scenes, while listeners in China envisioned completely different stories.
?These results paint a more complex picture of music?s power,? said Margulis, a professor of music who uses theoretical, behavioral and neuroimaging methodologies to investigate the dynamic experience of listeners. ?Music can generate remarkably similar stories in listeners? minds, but the degree to which these imagined narratives are shared depends on the degree to which culture is shared across listeners.?
The 622 participants came from three regions across two continents: two suburban college towns in middle America ? one in Arkansas and the other in Michigan ? and a group from Dimen, a village in rural China where the primary language is Dong, a tonal language not related to Mandarin, and where the residents have little access to Western media.
All three groups of listeners ? in Arkansas, Michigan and Dimen ? heard the same 32 musical stimuli: 60-second snippets of instrumental music, half from Western music and half from Chinese music, all without lyrics. After each musical excerpt, they provided free-response descriptions of the stories they envisioned while they listened.
The results were striking. Listeners in Arkansas and Michigan described very similar stories, often using the same words, while the Dimen listeners envisioned stories that were similar to each other but very different from those of American listeners.
For example, a musical passage identified only as W9 brought to mind a sunrise over a forest, with animals waking and birds chirping for American listeners, while those in Dimen pictured a man blowing a leaf on a mountain, singing a song to his beloved. For musical passage C16, Arkansas and Michigan listeners described a cowboy, sitting alone in the desert sun, looking out over an empty town; participants in Dimen imagined a man in ancient times sorrowfully contemplating the loss of his beloved.
Quantifying similarities between free-response stories required huge amounts of natural language data processing. The tools and strategies that they developed will be useful in future studies, said Margulis, who is also the director of Princeton?s Music Cognition lab. ?Being able to map out these semantic overlaps, using tools from natural language processing, is exciting and very promising for future studies that, like this one, straddle the border between the humanities and the sciences.?
?It?s amazing,? said co-author Benjamin Kubit, a drummer and a postdoctoral research associate previously in the Princeton Neuroscience Institute and now in the Department of Music. ?You can take two random people who grew up in a similar environment, have them listen to a song they haven?t heard before, ask them to imagine a narrative, and you?ll find similarities. However, if those two people don?t share a culture or geographical location, you won?t see that same kind of similarity in experience. So while we imagine music can bring people together, the opposite can also be true ? it can distinguish between sets of people with a different background or culture.?
Though the researchers had carefully ensured that the pieces they chose had never appeared in a movie soundtrack or any other setting that would prescribe visuals, the same music sparked very similar visuals in hundreds of listeners ? unless they had grown up in a different cultural context.
?It?s stunning to me that some of these visceral, hard-to-articulate, imagined responses we have to music can actually be widely shared,? said Margulis. ?There?s something about that that?s really puzzling and compelling, especially because the way we encounter music in 2022 is often solitary, over headphones. But it turns out, it?s still a shared experience, almost like a shared dream. I find it really surprising and fascinating ? with the caveat, of course, that it?s not universally shared, but depends on a common set of cultural experiences.?
Co-author Cara Turnbull, a concert bassist turned graduate student in musicology, said: ?It?s just fascinating how much our upbringings shape us as individuals while also giving us enough common experiences that we relate to this media in ways that are simultaneously unique and shared.?

The study, published today in the Journal of Adolescent Health, used Household Pulse Survey (HPS) data from the U.S. Census Bureau to determine the prevalence of anxiety and/or depression symptoms in a sample of 2,809 adults ages 18-25 years. The data, collected in June through early July 2021, also included rates of mental health service utilization and unmet need for mental health therapy.
Forty-eight percent of young adults reported mental health symptoms and, among those with symptoms, 39% used prescription medications and/or received counseling, while 36% reported unmet counseling need. Female, Hispanic and uninsured young adults had the greatest unmet need, though these trends were not statistically significant.
The ?unmet need? figures were a bit surprising, said Sally Adams, PhD, RN, specialist in UCSF?s Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine.
?Given that only about one third of those with symptoms received care, we might have expected to see closer to two-thirds reporting unmet need,? said Adams. ?It could be that the people with symptoms who didn?t report unmet need either didn?t think their symptoms were serious enough for treatment or feared the stigma of needing mental health services.?
While the rates of mental health symptoms in this study are high, they are a decline from a CDC study that found 63% of young adults were experiencing depression or anxiety a year earlier in June 2020.
Nonetheless, the consistent findings of significant mental health struggles among young adults highlight the importance of addressing barriers to care for this group, such as cost, stigma and confidentiality concerns, the authors wrote.
There is also a need to improve the size, distribution, and capacity of the mental health workforce, noted Charles Irwin Jr., MD, UCSF professor of pediatrics.

The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Waterloo, identified several areas, including player fatigue, mental stress and peak performance conditions, that require in-depth research to improve coaching and player performance.
?They burn out because they spend long hours sitting at desks playing and training,? said Bader Sabtan, a systems design engineering PhD student who led the study. ?It results in all kinds of problems, from mental health issues to back and wrist injuries.?
In a survey of professional League of Legends teams, it was found there are virtually no standardized coaching approaches or techniques to guide young players.
Instead, players work to remain competitive in the constantly changing team battle video game, one of several with lucrative fan followings around the world, by practicing 12 to 14 hours a day, six days a week.
Professional esports fill stadiums with spectators as players, who average just 18 to 20 years of age, compete at computers while their games are shown on giant screens. One championship event in 2018 drew almost 100 million online viewers.
The researchers focused on League of Legends, which has 47 pro teams in North America, Europe, Korea and China. Players can earn more than $400,000 a year, but rarely have careers that last beyond three or four years.
Coaches who participated in the study unanimously agreed that methods must be developed to make practice more efficient and strategic to reduce the demands on players.
?I was surprised to learn even top professional coaches don?t have systematic training methods,? said Shi Cao, a systems design engineering professor and a member of the Games Institute at Waterloo. ?Nothing is supported by scientific evidence or research.
?Just as physiology and kinesiology research supports traditional sports, cognitive psychology and human factors engineering can support mental work like esports,? said Cao, an esports fan and recreational player.
Sabtan can personally relate to the relentless demands on the best players. A few years ago, he was in the top one per cent of League of Legends players and spent up to 50 hours a week practicing to stay there.
?Right now, there is no other option,? Sabtan said. ?The required sharpness, game knowledge and reaction speed are only achieved by practicing and repetition, so they just play the game. They don?t have social lives. They don?t have girlfriends or boyfriends. It?s unsustainable.?
